I concurrently downloaded the OSM generic file to copy to the card in my Garmin, but need the detailed maps on my Mac to plan my routes. The global basemap does not have any usable detail for Thailand.
Up till I upgraded to el Capitan, i was able to install maps to basecamp on my mac. I tried all the aboveanswers[moderator edit after conversion to comment], but now i'm unable to install the OSM maps on my computer. I wish someone could help,
I have had the same battle for years. Every time I take a 'trip' (yearly) I stress because I cannot load maps from OSM to garmin with mac. I even stumbled onto a OSM thread about my case (my screenshot) from oct 2008...I recognize the setup. STILL can't do it correctly and spend more time than my vacations trying to get it to work. Pretty sad. I can get the gmap, but not the .img...hit and miss. I am about ready to give up on maps and just use my topo that i have.
You need to download the "osm generic macosx.zip" and this will extract to the file "OSM generic routable(THA_19-01-2015).gmap" and that when double-clicked will install on the mac using Garmin MapManager.app I think and Basecamp on the Mac will load it fine. It worked for me ok. You may have downloaded the Windows or Linux file by mistake or got amongst the "Nullsoft Scriptable Installer script used to create the BaseCamp/MapSource installer." which is probably a Windows thing?
I am using el capitain. I have followed the renaming new folders advice above, and still nothing good. Finder simply opens the new folder.gmapi when I double click, Basecamp browser launched from 'Import into My Collections' also simply opens the folder and leaves the 'import' button greyed out. Should I be using a different command from within Basecamp? Do I need anythign else installed on the MAC to make a double click in Finder work? My maps were created by garmin.opensetreemap.nl, and I am using the OSX.zip
I finally found a solution. Actually still cannot import directly in basecamp as i used to but......!!!!!! After about a year of no more new OSM maps on my basecamp (mac osx el capitan), I just installed a new map for the first time again. :-)the solution for me is: don't import into basecamp (I stopped trying, none of the above helped me and couldn't find a solution). Instead: paste the map directly into the gps, then connect the gps to the computer and basecamp imports the map from the gps.
To unzip the file you just downloaded, right-click on it and choose Extract Here. Things may look a bit different if you have WinZip installed. If you see no way to unzip your file, please download and install WinRAR first.
If you do not like the appearance of your Garmin or the Freitzeitkarten-OSM maps than you can modify/change the TYP-file associated with the map. For this you should have a look at two important tools: JaVaWa GMTK which allows you to associate a different TYP-File with a map and TYPWiz 6 which allows you to edit an existing TYP-File. At least for me this has opened and whole new world in customizing BaseCamp and make it more useful for my needs. This is also explained here: -osm.de/garmin/en/design.html There you can find some alternate designs.
I use the Ibycus Topo Canada map as my main map for off-the-beaten-path adventures. Because this is a very large map, Ibycus does not distribute the files directly. You need to download a copy using BitTorrent. I was able to find a copy of version Ibycus 3.2 for Mac, but I could only ever find the Windows version of Ibycus 4.0. Today, I was able to convert Ibycus 4.0 to Mac .gmap format, and I thought I would use that as an example of converting Garmin Windows maps for use on a Mac. (Caveat: since JaVaWa is a free tool and not supported by Garmin, it is not guaranteed to work, and I have no idea how it works with locked maps). I will assume you have your Windows map files already.
I downloaded the osm_generic_macosx.zip file on my computer. When I extract it, I don't see any executable file, only a folder named "OSM generic routable(GUF_13-08-2015).gmap" that contains various non executable files.
I have been using OSM for a while. I am using Basecamp on a Mac with OSX 10.10.5. I am sure that when I used to download a map from OSM.NL i would simply double click it and it would install itself, but now there is no executable file. Am i mis-remembering or being a bit thick?
You should use the other tool, called gmtk. The download file from the garmin site (osm_generic_macosx.zip) should be expanded. What you get is a file with an extension of .gmap (or .gmapi).
Many of the maps downloaded from this site or purchased from Garmin or other websites can be viewed on your computer via Garmin Mapsource or Garmin BaseCamp. Garmin BaseCamp (Mac & Windows) is the current mapping program for use with all Garmin GPS units. It has replaced Garmin MapSource in recent time. In this tutorial we will help you decide if the map is easily loaded into BaseCamp and then how to open the map and see it in BaseCamp.
Note you need to move the gmap folder which is inside the gmapi folder - not the gmapi folder. Since I took those screenshots I adapted the map format (as garmin did so too) from mtbCOUNTRY.gmap to mtbCOUNTRY.gmapi/mtbCOUNTRY.gmap as in some cases this would solve the problem of Garmin MapInstaller not opening.
a) Two folders to enable/disable showing the contourlines. "20m_contourlines" respectively "10m_contourlines" with an Info.xml inside to enable the contourlines and "Remove_Contourlines with an Info.xml to disable the contourlines in the map. Just copy/paste the Info.xml from here to the main folder, i.e. mtbtaiwan.gmap and overwrite the Info.xml in there. by default the 20m contourlines are active for all maps that have contourlines integrated and not in a separate download of course.
Immediately after paying, you will be directed to a page where you can download the map directly. You will also receive an email containing all the order details and the download link. The download Link will expire after 90 days.
Once downloaded, it may open to show the installation folder. If not, open it from your Downloads menu in your browser (double click on it) or open your Downloads folder, find and open it there (double click there too).
